EU JURI and PANA Committee To Hold Hearing On The Protection Of Whistleblowers

On June 21, the Members of the EU Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) and PANA Committee will hold a hearing with experts on legitimate measures to protect whistle-blowers acting in the public interest when disclosing the confidential information of companies and public bodies.

Protection for whistleblowers

The EU Parliament informed it is in the process of drafting an own initiative report on an EU wide protection for whistleblowers. "Whistleblowers are crucial for the functioning of the EU and the European project, not least show by the Panama Papers and the political reactions that followed," the PANA Committee informed.

The programme

Following the introduction, the following topics will be presented:

  1. Current whistleblower rules in MS by Vigjilenca Abazi, Assistant professor, Maastricht university
  2. Whistleblowing in practical life by Cathy James, Chief executive, Public concerns at work
  3. Legal basis for a better protection at EU level by Frédérique Berrod, Professor, College of Europe
  4. Outcome of the inquiry on the Rules on whistleblowing rules within the EU Institutions by Rosita Hickey, Head of Strategic Inquiries, EU Ombudsman
  5. Whistleblowing from an industry point of view by Charlotte Grass, Head of Competition and Conformity, Group Vallourec

The presentation will be followed by discussion with JURI and PANA Members. The public hearing will be streamed online.
