Since 2018, the Australian Government has been implementing e-Invoicing with the support of the PEPPOL network, effectively enabling public and private entities to exchange invoices electronically. As of July 1st, 2022, e-Invoicing is compulsory for all Business-to-Government (B2G) transactions. The Business E-invoicing Rights (BER) initiative further mandates the acceptance and issuance of e-Invoices for Business-to-Business (B2B) transactions upon request.
Under this progressive initiative, the timelines for taxpayer inclusion are as follows:
Large businesses: From July 1, 2023;
Medium-sized businesses: From July 1, 2024;
Remaining businesses: From July 1, 2025.
Please note that e-Invoices, which do not require pre-submission signatures, must be in the PEPPOL BIS Billing 3.0 format and should be archived for 5 years. These changes signify a significant step toward enhancing tax processes in Australia.
Effective date: July 1, 2023
